It can be seen that the difference of the annual vegetation cover between west and east China is obvious.

NDVI are less than 0.1 in arid areas of northwestern China, while vegetation
cover in eastern China is much better than western China(Fig. a).

Compared with other figures, summer(Fig. b) has the best vegetation cover. NDVI in most
areas of eastern China are larger than 0.3 and in northeastern China NDVI are larger than 0.5. However, NDVI in most areas of northwestern China are still less than 0.1, except some areas in northern Xinjiang Province (Fig. b).

In winter, NDVI decrease in most areas of eastern China, while southwestern and southeastern China have high vegetation cover (Fig. c).

Fig. d means the NDVI in summer minus NDVI in winder. Hence, we can see the seasonal change between summer and winter. Northwestern China is arid areas and southwestern and southeastern China with high vegetation show little seasonal variation.

Figs on the left shows the spatial distribution of annual mean NDVI over China during (a) 1982`1999,  (b) Summer, (c) Winter and (d) Summer-Winter
